I'd like us all to take 10 seconds in silence to remember the people who helped us become who we are.
"If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?"
What's news
In the last analysis, it is our conception of death, which decides our answers to all the questions that life puts to us.-Dag Hammarskjold

It is suggestive rather than explanatory, its object being to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that-- "They themselves are makers of themselves" by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.James AllenThe 15 Immutable Laws (Link does not exist any more.) A severe-looking man with a kindly twinkle in his eyes, he sat patiently waiting for us to articulate the question that had brought us to him from such a distance. Finally, we made an attempt: "What are you really talking about? What do you mean by 'eradicating craving'?" Achaan Chaa looked down and smiled faintly. He picked up the glass of drinking water to his left. Holding it up to us, he spoke in the chirpy Lao dialect that was his native tongue: "You see this goblet? For me, this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on a shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, 'Of course.' But when I understand that this glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious."

The rights of one are as sacred as the rights of a million. Eugene V. Debs, US labor leader.Note: Debs received one million votes in 1920 as candidate for US President, while serving a 10 year jail sentence for having said in June 1918: "Wars throughout history have been waged for conquest and plunder...the master class has always declared the wars; the subject class has always fought the battles."

"Be robbers and conquerors, as long as you cannot be rulers and owners, you lovers of knowledge! Soon the age will be past when you could be satisfied to live like shy deer, hidden in the woods!"
-- Nietzsche, _Live Dangerously_.
#Philosophy is an efnet channel that encourages intellectual and philosophical discussions dealing with current events, controversial issues, personal struggles, and scientific discoveries. Like most channels it tends to have an operating 'elite' which you may or may not find suitable to your tastes. Thoughout the history of the channel, 'dissident' channels have arisen with similar aims but different means. While #philosophy2 and #dialectic are largely dead, #truth seems to be a promising new channel. The channel has been going through a growing paint. Unfortunately -- or fortunately, depending on your perspective, #truth is shaping up to be what #philosophy might have originally meant to be.
Popular topics in #philosophy include: consciousness, positivism and its flaws, metaphysics, religious questions, anthropology, Eastern religion and heritage, and institutions which wish to represent the freethinking mind, i.e. the American Atheists. In addition, some politics are discussed, but mostly in broad, general terms.
The common complains on #philosophy seem to be that there are too much drivel and noise on the channel and not enough real discussions. To address these complains Raulsan has compiled the Top Ten most common lines heard on #philosophy. Also if you find that there are too much noise for you to sustain a dialog, and there are enough interest, consider migrating to #philosophy2, #truth2, or #truths.
